Landmannalaugar & Mt. Hekla – Jeep Safari Tour

landmannalaugar 5
We offer a unique and unforgettable super jeep excursion to this striking “jewel of the interior”.
Landmannalaugar is the pearl of Iceland’s central highlands, situated in a valley between colourful, steep mountains at the high and dark edge of the Laugahraun lava field. The route passes through Þjórsárdalur valley and crosses lava fields of different eras, small rivers and volcanic craters, which make up an peculiar lunar-type landscape. landmannalaugar 2Landmannalaugar is surrounded by colourful mountains due to centuries of volcanic activity in the area and is indescribably beautiful; you just have to see for yourself. The mountains are split with gullies and gorges that are ideal for hiking.
At Landmannalaugar you can have an outside bath in a natural warm pool where many hot and cold springs have mixed together. Note: The banks of the pool are boggy and lushly vegetated so people are kindly asked stay on the wooden path. The use of soap is forbidden in the pool.
On our way back to Reykjavík we drive along the roots of Mt. Hekla, Iceland’s most active volcano. Hekla is the queen of mountains on the island and has erupted on average every 10 years in the 20th century, the last one in the year 2000. The frequent eruptions have created dramatic scenery with thick layers of ash and lava in the surrounding area. Return to Reykjavik late afternoon.

Icelandic nature and wilderness - 3 days post-conference tour 13 - 15 June

Day 1 - Sunday 13 June - The "Þríhyringur" hike.

thrihyrningurPick up at hotel at 12:00 on specially outfitted super-jeeps. Drive along the south coast through one of the largest agriculture areas. Where one of the old viking sagas "Njála" took place. Then we find the mountain of "Þríhyrningur" (transl. Triangle) hike all the way to the top
enjoy the magnificent view over the south of Iceland. From there we can also see the volcano Eyjafjallajökull from a very safe distance I might add. We will have a packed lunch on the top. When we return from the hike we will drive even closer to the volcano and visit a beautiful waterfall that runs from the glacier of the volcano. Not only will we admire the waterfall but we will also walk behind it! Sounds crazy but it's not, it's just awesome :)

Day 2 - Monday 14 June - "Landmannalaugar - geothermal wonder"

landmannalaugar 5A unique geothermal area in the highlands with a natural hot spring river to swim in. This
area is also known for it's beautiful and popular hiking routes. We drive from the hotel around 09.00 straight into the heart of the highlands. Through the lava fields of old Hekla and over a few unbridged rivers towards this colourful oasis. We will be there around noon so the best thing to do first is to have an old fashioned Icelandic BBQ where we grill something good (fresh water trout, lamb or chicken) With fresh locally grown vegetables and a secret dairy dessert made from the delicious SKYR. After the feast we go hiking among spectacular rock formations and after you can dip into the natural hot tub that is a combination of fresh water stream and geothermal spring that comes together to create this wonderful warm bath for weary travelers. For the bath we need to change in the cabin(or outside if you like ;) and then walk for a few minutes before reaching the warm stream so bringing a bathrobe is a good idea. We can borrow them
rom the hotel. After this rejuvinating experience we drive back into the mountain roads and take different road back home. Then at the hotel in the evening there will be yet another little feast waiting for you. "Landmannalaugar" may be a long and strange name but I promise you won't forget it after a day's visit :)

Day 3 - Tuesday 15 June - Icelandic nature and wilderness

gg 8Now we go to visit the Great "Geysir" geothermal area where we willtake a look at the areas namesake and its neighbour, "Strokkur" a feisty geyser which spouts every 5-10 minutes. From there we drive up through the barren mountain to Langjökull glacier for an unforgettable discovery of this enormous glacier and if you like we can go even deeper and into a beautiful ice cave but that's only accessible by snowmobiles that we can rent with guides by the glacier. After this wonderful discovery we drive down again towards "Gullfoss" the golden waterfall, one of Iceland’s most beautiful waterfalls; in two giant steps the water falls 32 meters into a deep gorge. Then like proper vikings we go to "Thingvellir" (Transl. parliament fields) national park, site of the ancient Viking parliament, here we get a good view over the geologically unique rift valley where the two continents of Europe and America are drifting apart. We can take a short stroll between them if you like. Arrival in Reykjavik in the afternoon.
