Travel & General information |
Iceland is located in the Northwest Atlantic Ocean, its high north touching the Polar Circle. Reykjavík is the the world’s most northerly capital city, giving it light nights from the middle of May untill the end of July. Due to the effect of the Gulf Stream, winters in the southwest of Iceland, where Reykjavík is located, are in fact somewhat warmer than in large parts of continental Europe. The down side is a cooling effect in summer, which makes a summer temperature of over 15° a rare occurence in Reykjavík.
Travel from Europe to Iceland is easy with Iceland’s international airport at Keflavík only about three hours away from London, Paris, Amsterdam, Copenhagen and Stockholm. Iceland’s national carrier, Icelandair, operates regular flights to many European cities and a new low budget airline, Iceland Express, flies to Keflavík Airport from Copenhagen-Kastrup and London-Stansted, which connects to low-budget airlines that fly to cities all over Europe.
Tourism has been increasing rapidly in Iceland, doubling from 150.000 to more than 300.000 visitors a year in the last 15 years and is expected to reach a million by 2020. Conference tourism, in particular, is increasing fast.Conference participants can book their flights online at the following links but Your Host in Iceland is more than willing to assist participants in booking flights and other travel arrangements.
