Dear friends, We are proud to invite you to this “meeting of minds” at the 5th Nordic Conference on Research on Autism Spectrum Disorders. The first conference was held in Vexjö, Sweden, in 1999 by pioneers who had pointed out the need for the Nordic countries to share their knowledge in this field. This need was rooted in the firm belief that research on autism (ASDs) is an integral part of understanding this neurodevelopmental / neuropsychiatric disorder and also that the cooperation of the Nordic countries in various fields had proven fruitful in many ways, partially because of their similar cultural background and shared values. Whether you are studying autism from the point of view of genetics, pathogenesis, neurobiology, epidemiology, screening and diagnosis, treatment efficacy, service planning, parenthood, the coping skills of families or some other consideration, we are interested in your contribution. At the conference, talks will be given by Nordic researchers, clinicians, and others. Also, we are happy to announce that Dr Catherine Lord and Dr Eric Fombonne have agreed to act as keynote speakers, and joining these scholars is a young scientist from Holland, Dr. Annelies de Bildt. All of these lecturers will help us define our research emphasis in the future. Individual differences may represent weaknesses as well as strengths. With the conference we want to make a difference for people with autism by better understanding their needs and how they contribute to our culture.
