Excursions Wednesday 24 & Sunday 28 August Borgarfjörður and the surroundings of Egils-saga The Icelandic Sagas are renowned throughout the world. In Borgarfjörður we follow in the footsteps of the Viking warrior and poet, Egill Skallagrímsson, from Egils-saga, one of the most famous of the Icelandic Sagas.We drive through the valley of Hvalfjörður (the old whaling station) on to district of Borgarfjörður. Our first stop is by Deildatunguhver, Iceland´ largest hot spring in the Northern Hemispare . We visit Reykholt, the home of the greatest medieval writer, poet, scholar and statesman, Snorri Sturluson (1179-1241). Our next stop is at Hraunfossar, which is a series of waterfalls formed by rivulets streaming over a distance of about 900 meters out of a lava filed from an eruption from underneath Langjökull glacier. We stop for lunch at The Settlement Centre in the village of Borgarnes and taste the famous Icelandic meatsoup followed by a visit to the Settlement Exhibition. This exhibition provides an insight into the settlement of Iceland. It tells how the land was discovered, how the Viking sailors conquered the open ocean and why they left their homelands in Norway. The Settlement centre is truly a place to remind us of our Nordic heritage and give us an insight in the history of the Vikings. Departure: 09:00. Snæfellsjökull (glacier) National Park Snæfellsjökull volcano tour and Volcano Museum experience This is a unique one-day tour of the Snæfellsnes peninsula of western Iceland, with expert guidance of Profesor Haraldur Sigurdsson of the University of Rhode Island. He will meet the group at Vegamót on the south side of the Snæfellsnes peninsula, and guide you through the beautiful and interesting geologic landscape to Snæfellsjökull volcano. We will traverse the volcano, driving over Jökulháls, right to the edge of the glacier. This glacier is currently thinning at an incredible rate of about 4 meters every year, due to global warming. After a stop on the volcano, we continue to the north side of the Snæfellsnes peninsula, through dramatic scenery that is a mix of the volcanic and glacial history of Iceland. During a stop on Berserkjahraun lava field, we experience the magnificent sculptures that a basaltic lava has made, flowing over the land some 3800 years ago. We proceed to the picturesque village of Stykkishólmur, where we visit the Volcano Museum that has been set up here to house the collection of Profesor Sigurdsson. Departure: 08:00. Duration: 3 hours (riding 1,5 - 2 hours) Bike tour / Coast of Reykjavik A visit to Reykjavik is incomplete without traveling along the city’s coastline by bike. We won’t just show you the essential “must-see” sights of Iceland’s capital; We tell you the stories that bring these places to life! Experience Iceland's evening sun from a bicycle saddle. Join us on a trip along Reykjavik's coast which is the perfect way to spend a midsummer's night in town. The route usually includes but is not limited to the following places; Perlan area, Nautholsvík thermal beach, Seltjarnarnes peninsula and bird sanctuary, Grotta tidal island and lighthouse. Meeting time: 15 minutes before scheduled departure at the University of Iceland Included:Guided bike tour, light refreshments Price: 35 EUR Whale watching - afternoon The whale watching tours start from the Reykjavik Old Harbour and on The Rose we sail past the puffin islands Akurey and Lundey, inhabited by thousands of puffins. From there it takes only a short time to get to where the whales are. In the whale watching tours you´ll see whales in their natural environment, quite up close and personal. The friendly guides and captain point out where to spot the whales on the surface of the sea and give you interesting information about the different kinds of whales you can expect to see.It is safe to name the trip Whale Watching Express as The Rose is quite a fast cruiser, taking less time to reach the adventure out to the whales. Therefore the whale watching adventures with Special Tours only take 2 - 2 ½ hours. Our passengers get the same amount of time whale watching, simply less time waiting! Eat the day’s catch for dinner, freshly prepared by an on-board chef, on the way back to the harbor. Local fish include Haddock, Cod, Catfish, Pollock, Whiting, and Halibut.Participants are recommended to bring warm clothes and their own beverages, but all fishing gear is provided on board. The mountain makes a strong pillar in the lives of the inhabitants of Reykjavík vicinity. Some people even say that they can make a weather prognose by looking at the colours of the mountain. We take it nice and easy on our way up the mountain and enjoy the climbing with good stops in between for information and stories from the guide. At the top we enjoy the view, write our names in the mountain guest book before we head down again. Duration: 3 - 4 hours Departure: 17:30. NOTE pick up at the University of Iceland 30 min. prior to departure Price: 60 EUR Excursion 27 August Superjeep-Selfdrive - Challenge on Reykjanes Peninsula After lunch at 13:00 all participants meet up at our starting point by the University of Iceland and get an instruction and a short lecture on the driving techniques with the Super Jeeps on roads and in rough terrain. As soon all formalities are finished, the tour starts with the leading vehicle taking the course to the East, we drive on the ring road to get out of Reykjavík. We reach Hellisheiði pass were we have the first opportunity to try the vehicles in rough terrain on the track we like to call „1000 Water Way“. From there we head over to Reykjanes Peninsula. We drive down to the black beaches by the Atlantic Ocean and you have the chance to test your driving skills on the beach. From there we visit a geothermal area with bubbling mud pools and drive on some fun tracks around Lake Kleifarvatn before reaching Reykjavík.Duration: Approx. 4 -5 hours Departure: 13:00. Meeting time: 15 minutes before scheduled departure at the University in Iceland. Note! Price: 108 EUR Excursion Sunday 28 August Superjeep-Selfdrive - Challenge on the Golden Circle In the morning all participants meet up at our starting point at 08:15 and get an instruction and a short lecture on the driving techniques with the Super Jeeps on roads and in rough terrain. As soon all formalities are finished, the tour starts with the leading vehicle taking the course to the East, we drive on the ring road to get out of Reykjavík. We reach Hellisheiði pass were we have the first opportunity to try the vehicles in rough terrain on the track we like to call „1000 Water Way“. From there we head inland to visit the famous Geysir Hot Spring and Gullfoss Waterfall.After lunch break and after seeing these beautiful places it is time to try out the modified vehicles again by driving on numerous highland tracks around the picturesque shield volcano Skjaldbreið. We spend the afternoon driving in the mountains and having fun with our modified vehicles. On our way back to Reykjavík in the late afternoon we drive through the National Park Þingvellir, the only UNESCO‘s cultural world-heritage site in Iceland. We make a stop where you can eyewitness the continental plates drifting apart. Duration: 10 hours Departure: 08:15. Meeting time: 15 minutes before scheduled departure at the University in Iceland.
